Introduction
Straddling Fort Mountain and commanding a breathtaking view of the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Blue Ridge Mountains is the new (opened in the Fall of 2002) Overlook Inn. This Inn was designed and situated to take full advantage of its magnificent surroundings. Its rustic exterior blends into the environment, yet conceals elegant lodge accommodations.
The main gathering area has lustrous hardwood floors, rich leather furnishings, plush oriental rugs, and a wood-burning fireplace. The lobby has seating for twenty-four, where guests can enjoy a southern gourmet breakfast in the morning, cards and board games in the afternoon, and complementary wine cheese in the evening.
Enjoy a book from the extensive library, play the antique piano or watch the ever-changing kaleidoscope of colors of the mountain landscape from the large ceiling-to-floor windows. Stroll through the native plant garden of the lodge or relax on the large stone patio around an outdoor fireplace.
History...
The history of this unspoiled area is as hazy as its blue peaks at nightfall, especially the origin of the "fort" in Fort Mountain. A Cherokee shaman in the county relates the legend of the stone forts constructed by a race of the "Moon Eyes" - a people with blue or light eyes, which eyes could pierce the darkness. A different version tells of a mysterious Welsh Prince Mardoc who came up from the south and constructed the fort as protection against the Native Americans. A third theory attributes the fortification to the conquistador, Hernando DeSoto. Today's residents regularly uncover arrowheads and Indian artifacts.
The area abounds with activities and points of interest. Explore the lodge's woodland trail accessible from your room or hike the many trails of the Chattahoochee National Forest or Fort Mountain State Park. The official start of the Appalachian Trail is a short distance away.
Peruse the antique shops in Ellijay, or stroll into Coyote Redd's, the unique mountain crafts gift shop located on the lodge's property. Simply relax and experience nature's extravaganzas - the pyrotechnics of a mountain sunrise or the beauty of a lingering sunset.
