The history of the Maison Orleans begins in January 1902 when Thomas and Charles Pickford, brothers, submitted an application for a building permit to erect four, two sotry brick dwellings with basements. In October 1902, John W. Beardmore, along with his two sons, purchased 414 5th Street SE. The 1914 city directory lists all three as machinists employed at the Washington Navy Yard. John's son James married Alice Lanham and raised two children, James W. and May C. at the 5th Street house

In 1938 James and Alice sold the property to Alex Berlin, a local merchant, who owned and operated Berlin's Hardware Store located in the six hundred block of Pennsylvania Ave, SE. Mr.Berlin leased the property to William and Buena Christian who lived in the property till July 1961. In 1961, Paul K. Curtin, the third owner, purchased the property from the estate of Alex Berlin, who died in the late 1960's.

By 1962 Paul Curtin had completely renovated the property. Realize what you see today is a direct result of his dedication to not only preserving the history of this home, but the neighborhood he so dearly loved. Mr.Curtin passed away February 27, 1992 of pneumonia while on vacation in Florida. He would be so proud of the success of the Maison Orleans. His childhood four-poster "rope" bed is now located in the Raspberry-Creole Room for guests to enjoy.
